A New Chapter in Madrid: Introducing VIR by Dr. Ferrer

An evening of celebration brought together 87 years of pharmaceutical expertise and the engineers building MoxieLink’s next innovations.

Twenty-six engineers, three days of building and a new chapter for a Spanish pharmaceutical company with 87 years of history. There was plenty to celebrate when the MoxieLink™ engineering team, VIR employees and invited guests gathered at The Palace Hotel in Madrid on Friday, October 16.
Called Noche de Éxito, the evening marked the close of our second Madrid Moxiethon and welcomed VIR into Ferrer Global Corp., the international group founded by Dr. Gustavo Ferrer that also includes The Moxie Health Group and its healthcare technology platform, MoxieLink.
“We brought together people who have spent decades making medicines and engineers developing new ways to support patient care,” said Dr. Gustavo Ferrer. “That’s what makes this next chapter so exciting: the chance to learn from one another and build something together that reaches more patients.”
Operating as VIR by Dr. Ferrer, the company sits where proven pharmaceutical manufacturing meets innovation, building on decades of experience to advance research, product development and technology.
Introducing VIR by Dr. Ferrer
VIR brings EU GMP-certified manufacturing, approximately 100 employees, more than 260 registered medicines and an international presence in more than 40 countries. Behind those numbers are generations of scientists, pharmacists and technicians whose knowledge will help shape the company’s future.
The acquisition adds established pharmaceutical development and manufacturing capabilities to Ferrer Global Corp., complementing the group’s work through Dr. Ferrer BioPharma. It also establishes Madrid as a base for European growth and collaboration, with an initial focus on opportunities in respiratory treatments and advanced drug-delivery systems.
For Moxie, the connection is rooted in a shared purpose: bringing medical expertise, technology and treatment closer to the people who need them.
“We did not come to VIR simply to acquire a factory. We came to build upon 87 years of history and give that legacy a new future,” said Dr. Gustavo Ferrer, founder of Ferrer Global Corp. and The Moxie Health Group.
At The Palace Hotel, VIR employees met the colleagues whose clinical and technology work forms another part of that vision.
Three days of building
The celebration capped a week-long gathering for MoxieLink's global engineering team. Twenty-six engineers came together in Madrid, spending three days working in teams on challenges within the platform.
Their assignment was straightforward: make MoxieLink work better for the clinicians and facilities that use it every day.
On the final workday, each team presented its solution to Moxie’s executive leadership, who served as judges. Project details remain internal while the work is evaluated for further development.
The first-place team received a medal and certificates, and the top three teams earned cash prizes. The evening recognized their achievements and the contributions of every engineer who presented.
What is a Moxiethon?
Moxiethon began in Honduras as a challenge for software engineering students to develop solutions for MoxieLink. It has since grown into a recurring event that gives engineers dedicated time to tackle practical healthcare problems together.
Previous gatherings have included Madrid in 2025, Panama in March 2026 and Honduras in August 2026.
Each edition starts with the same question: What can we build that will make everyday work easier for the people caring for patients?
From Madrid to the bedside
During the evening, Dr. Ferrer traced Moxie’s growth from a pulmonary practice into a multispecialty post-acute care organization serving 140 facilities across 10 states. He also described how an internal engineering idea grew into a platform supporting that work.
For the nursing homes and rehabilitation centers we serve, these developments have a practical purpose. Faster documentation, clearer data and better communication can help care teams recognize concerns and respond sooner.
VIR by Dr. Ferrer adds pharmaceutical expertise to the wider group’s capabilities, creating opportunities to connect the development and manufacturing of treatments with the clinical needs that inspire them.
The work ahead
The next phase will focus on evaluating the Moxiethon projects for further development within MoxieLink and advancing VIR’s transition under its new name. Longer-term plans include strengthening manufacturing, developing research partnerships and exploring opportunities for European expansion.
The celebration in Madrid brought those ambitions into one room: the people preserving VIR’s pharmaceutical knowledge, the engineers developing new tools and the leadership connecting their work to patient care.
“We have a lot of work ahead, but we have the right people to do it,” Dr. Ferrer says.
