A New Chapter for Spain’s VIR Under Ferrer Global Corp.

With 87 years of pharmaceutical history, VIR becomes VIR by Dr. Ferrer, with plans to strengthen manufacturing, advance respiratory treatments and build an innovation hub in Madrid.
Five years ago, Dr. Gustavo Ferrer met the leadership of Spanish pharmaceutical company VIR at CPHI, an international pharmaceutical industry gathering. He was looking for manufacturing partners for new nasal medications. That meeting began a collaboration in pharmaceutical development and patented drug-delivery technologies … and ultimately led to an acquisition.
Today Ferrer Global Corp. has acquired VIR, bringing the company’s 87 years of pharmaceutical expertise into the international group. Operating under the name VIR by Dr. Ferrer, the pharmaceutical company is entering a new chapter focused on manufacturing, innovation and long-term growth.
“We did not come to VIR simply to acquire a factory. We came to build upon 87 years of history and give that legacy a new future,” says Dr. Ferrer, founder of Ferrer Global Corp.
VIR brings approximately 100 employees, a portfolio of more than 260 registered medicines and an international presence in more than 40 countries. For Ferrer, a physician whose career has focused on treating serious respiratory illnesses, the acquisition offers an opportunity to bring scientific development closer to everyday patient care.
Connecting medicines, technology and care
The vision begins with the needs physicians see in their patients: Where are existing treatments falling short? What could make care more effective or easier to deliver?
Ferrer Global Corp. aims to connect those needs with scientific teams that can develop treatments and digital tools that help physicians follow patients’ progress. Planned areas of development include respiratory therapies, nasal drug-delivery systems and technologies that support care outside traditional hospital settings.
“The future of healthcare is about developing better medicines and connecting better medicines with better technology and better care, wherever the patient may be,” Dr. Ferrer says.
Alongside those plans, Ferrer Global Corp. intends to strengthen VIR’s existing medicine portfolio and pursue international partnerships. New treatments and entry into additional markets will be subject to applicable regulatory approvals.
Building on a family’s legacy
VIR’s next chapter builds on the people who shaped its first 87 years. Ferrer said the experience of its employees and the foundation established by the family behind the company were central to the acquisition.
“The greatest value of VIR is not only in the medicines it produces, but in the knowledge of its people and the possibilities we can create together,” he says.
Plans include strengthening manufacturing processes, expanding digital capabilities and supporting employees’ professional development. As those efforts advance, the group also aims to attract talent in pharmaceutical science, engineering, biotechnology and digital technology.
“The family built the foundation. Our responsibility is to honor that foundation while opening the doors to the next 87 years,” Dr. Ferrer says.
Looking ahead to Madrid
Madrid is central to that future. Ferrer Global Corp. plans to make the city a strategic center for pharmaceutical manufacturing, research and development, and collaboration across Europe, the United States, and Latin America.
The vision for VIR by Dr. Ferrer includes a dedicated research and development initiative connecting pharmaceutical scientists, biomedical engineers, software developers, universities and technology partners. Potential projects include advanced respiratory treatments, connected medical technologies and digital manufacturing systems.
“My dream is that one day, when people think about pharmaceutical innovation in Madrid, VIR by Dr. Ferrer will be among the names that come to mind,” Dr. Ferrer says.
