In the heart of San Pedro Sula, a group of young Honduran engineers spent a weekend tackling one of healthcare’s biggest challenges: how to use technology not just to treat patients, but to truly care for them.
That vision powered Moxiethon 2025, The Moxie Health Group’s first-ever hackathon — a three-day innovation challenge that brought together over 50 computer science students from universities across Honduras. Their task was to design artificial intelligence solutions that make healthcare smarter, more efficient, and more human.
From Concept to Creation
Held from September 25-27, the event centered on the theme “AI in Healthcare” and challenged participants to build technology that bridges the gap between data and compassion. Over three days, students formed interdisciplinary teams, attended workshops, and worked with mentors from both Moxie Health and the broader healthcare and tech industries.
The atmosphere buzzed with collaboration as teams brainstormed and created. Workshops like “Building AI for Better Care” and “Perfecting Your Pitch” helped participants refine their technical and communication skills while exploring the capabilities of Moxie-Link, Moxie Health’s proprietary platform designed to connect care teams in real time.
“This hackathon was about more than coding,” said Dr. Gustavo Ferrer, founder and CEO of Moxie Health Group and Dr. Ferrer BioPharma. “It was about empowering young technologists in Honduras to design solutions that bridge innovation with compassion — connecting data, caregivers, and patients in ways that make care more human and effective.”

A Winning Idea with Real-World Impact
By the final day, teams presented their projects before a panel of judges, pitching ideas that ranged from predictive analytics tools to AI-powered communication systems. The winning team, composed of Roberto Carlos Garay Logan and Luis Fernando Bautista Castellanos, developed an automated system that analyzes calls between on-call agents and facility nurses, generating real-time summaries sent directly to nurse practitioners’ devices.
Their solution impressed judges with its potential to streamline communication and reduce response times — and Moxie Health plans to integrate it into Moxie Link to enhance coordination in long-term care facilities.
“Moxiethon reflects our commitment to innovation and community development,” said Dr. Alfonso Ortega, Chief Technology Officer at MoxieLink. “By engaging local talent, we’re not only advancing our technology but also creating opportunities for the next generation of engineers to shape the future of healthcare.”
Looking Ahead
The winning team will continue developing their project with The Moxie Health Group, gaining hands-on experience in the company’s mission to redefine long-term respiratory and patient care.
And this is only the beginning. Plans for Moxiethon 2026 are already underway, with expanded participation and new challenges in digital health, data analytics, and AI-driven care.
What began as a weekend of brainstorming in Honduras has become a model for how technology and empathy can work hand in hand — a reminder that the future of healthcare starts not in the cloud, but in the people who dare to innovate for others.
