At The Moxie Health Group, innovation doesn't begin with technology—it begins with research. Our new Research & Publications page highlights the peer-reviewed studies, clinical research and scientific collaborations that continue to advance Moxie's mission of delivering innovative, evidence-based care to patients across the country.
The page brings together research authored by Dr. Gustavo Ferrer and collaborators spanning pulmonary medicine, intranasal therapeutics, respiratory care and healthcare innovation. Visitors can browse published studies, download full manuscripts and explore the science behind many of the clinical approaches shaping patient care today.
Research that Makes an Impact
The page currently features:
17 publications
40+ peer-reviewed articles and abstracts
Research conducted across seven states within our post-acute and long-term acute care (LTACH) network
Together, these publications reflect years of collaboration between physicians, engineers, scientists, and healthcare professionals committed to translating research into better outcomes for patients.
Featured Research Highlights
Among the many studies now available on the page are several publications that illustrate how Moxie's research extends from the laboratory to real-world patient care.
One of the earliest publications featured on the page explores an idea that became increasingly relevant during the pandemic: the importance of the nose as the primary entry point for respiratory viruses. Published in Ear, Nose & Throat Journal, the paper argues that effective nasal hygiene and antiviral nasal sprays could serve as an additional layer of protection alongside handwashing, masking and vaccination, highlighting an often-overlooked strategy in respiratory disease prevention.
Another recent study examines how clinicians can determine when nursing home residents with chronic respiratory disease may no longer need supplemental oxygen. Researchers found that many patients who maintained oxygen saturation above 92% were able to safely discontinue long-term oxygen therapy without requiring readmission or restarting oxygen during follow-up, offering a practical framework for reducing unnecessary treatment while maintaining patient safety.
Innovation at Moxie also extends beyond medicine into engineering. A newly published proof-of-concept study evaluated whether changing the angle of a nasal spray nozzle could improve drug delivery to the nasopharynx. Using 3D-printed anatomical models and human usability testing, researchers demonstrated that an optimized spray angle significantly improved medication penetration while remaining easy for users to perform correctly. The work highlights how engineering design and human factors can work together to improve future therapies.
More Than a Publication List
The Research & Publications page will continue to grow as new studies are published, and new collaborations emerge. Whether the focus is pulmonary medicine, post-acute care, intranasal therapeutics or healthcare technology, every publication reflects the same goal: using rigorous science to improve the care patients receive every day.
As Moxie continues expanding its research efforts, this page will serve as a living library of the discoveries helping shape the future of respiratory and post-acute medicine.
Be sure to bookmark the Research & Publications page and check back regularly for the latest studies, publications and scientific advances from The Moxie Health Group research team.
